Canis is local-first.

Canis is an experimental on-device AI assistant. It is designed to answer questions, use local Sources, and show model disposition without requiring an account.

Summary

Canis does not sell personal data, does not use third-party advertising, and does not require a user account. Prompts, answers, chat history, downloaded models, and local Source indexes are stored on your device unless you explicitly choose to share feedback for research or support.

Data Stored On Your Device

Canis may store the following locally so the app can work:

Sources

When you add a PDF, text file, Markdown file, or other supported document as a Source, Canis processes it locally so the model can retrieve relevant passages and cite them. Deleting a Source removes the app's local copy and index for that Source.

Network Use

Canis may connect to the internet to download model files and app resources. If optional feedback sharing is enabled and you choose to share feedback, the feedback may be sent to Big Bear Engineering or its research infrastructure for debugging and product improvement.

Optional Feedback

If you explicitly share feedback, it may include the prompt, answer, correction text, disposition label, model metadata, app version, and an installation identifier so duplicate or related reports can be managed. This data is not used for tracking across apps or websites and is not sold.

Children

Canis is not directed to children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through support or feedback, contact us and we will delete it.
